New
Kent County was founded in 1654 and was named for Kent,
England. It originally was part of Charles River County, one
of the eight shires of Virginia. As churches began to sprout
up on the peninsula between the James, Pamunky and York
rivers, St. Peter's Church was established in 1678 in
Talleysville with a building being established in 1701. This
became the church where Martha Dandridge Custis worshiped
at the time of her marriage to George Washington.
